Stevie Rodriguez, freshman, College of Science and Health, offers comments while volunteering for the Sit, Stay, Read organization Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015, as part of her class's New Student Service Day volunteer work. The group of students aimed to write several hundred personal notes to grammar school students who will participate in the Sit, Stay, Read program during the 2015 school year. Sit, Stay, Read’s mission is to improve literacy skills and foster a love of learning in at-risk children. Founded in 2003, the organization brings teams of trained volunteers and certified reading assistance dogs to Chicago Public Schools and inner-city community programs. Nearly 1200 incoming students participating in the Discover Chicago program wrapped up their week of immersion by volunteering with area non-profits and community groups as part of DePaul University's New Student Service Day.
